In the case of gifts, you may always mix them in order to surprise the customer every time he visits your salon. Today he receives a hair mask, and the next visit you will give him a nice hairband, for example. It’s always amusing.
Discounts are much more universal. There is no risk that you will give a person something that he doesn’t need, because not every client will truly enjoy the gift, which is fine. Each person uses a discount and we don’t know any people who will mind the lower price.
