Keratin on Bleached Hair: A Step-by-Step Safe Protocol

Bleached hair clients often want keratin the most, and they are also the riskiest. Lightened hair has a damaged cuticle and a weakened cortex, so a standard protocol can cause breakage. Here is a safe keratin protocol for bleached hair.

1. Diagnose first

Do a porosity and elasticity test. If a wet strand stretches and doesn't return, or snaps immediately, the hair needs reconstruction before any smoothing. Never treat hair bleached in the last 10–14 days.

2. Clarify gently

Use one wash with a clarifying shampoo. On bleached hair, a second wash is rarely needed and can over-open the cuticle.

3. Reconstruct

Brasil Cacau's Thermal Reconstruction system is designed to rebuild the fiber with cacao and keratin. Apply in thin sections, using less product on porous ends.

4. Dry and lower the heat

Blow-dry to 100% dry on medium heat. Then flat iron at 360–390°F (180–200°C) instead of 450°F, with 5–7 slow passes on thin sections. Bleached ends may need only 3–4 passes.

5. Aftercare

Send clients home with sulfate-free products and tell them to wait 72 hours before tight ties. Book a maintenance visit in 8–12 weeks.

Pro tip

For salons treating many blondes, the 1000 ml professional size lowers cost per service. Our application guide covers more details.

With the right protocol, bleached clients leave with smooth, shiny and strong hair.
